It is the perfect choice for cottages, barn conversions, listed buildings and heritage renovations.
Designed for ledged, braced and plank doors, the latch operates using a simple thumb lever. Pressing the thumb piece lifts the latch bar on the opposite side, allowing the door to open smoothly. This reliable mechanism has been used for generations and remains one of the most distinctive features of traditional timber doors.
The elegant Gothic styling pairs beautifully with hand-forged tee hinges and other heritage ironmongery. Consequently, it creates an authentic appearance while providing dependable everyday performance.
Gothic Thumb Latch Features
Skilled blacksmiths forge every thumb latch by hand using traditional fire and anvil techniques. Consequently, each piece displays subtle variations that celebrate genuine craftsmanship rather than mass production.
To improve weather resistance, From The Anvil developed the exclusive External Beeswax finish using a specialist anti-corrosive beeswax treatment. Furthermore, the finish has successfully passed a 480-hour salt spray test while preserving the rich matt appearance associated with traditional beeswax products.
Beautiful colour variations range from soft blue-grey through to deep ochre red. As a result, every latch develops its own distinctive character while complementing timber doors, natural stone and other hand-forged ironmongery.
Designed for doors up to 55mm thick, this thumb latch works particularly well alongside traditional tee hinges. Together, they create an authentic period appearance that suits cottages, barn conversions and listed buildings.
External Beeswax Finish & Care
Occasionally, a light white bloom may appear after unpacking because of changes in temperature or storage conditions. However, this natural characteristic disappears quickly when you buff the surface with a soft cloth.
Although the External Beeswax finish already provides excellent protection, applying a small amount of From The Anvil Maintenance Wax every few months will help preserve its appearance. Likewise, wiping the latch with a lightly oiled cloth removes surface deposits and adds another layer of protection.
Before fitting the latch, allow all paint, stain and plaster to cure fully. Otherwise, trapped moisture may affect the finish.
Finally, this finish performs exceptionally well in damp environments such as kitchens, bathrooms and sheltered external doors. Nevertheless, From The Anvil does not recommend it for exposed coastal properties where airborne salt can accelerate corrosion. In those locations, marine-grade 316 stainless steel remains the best long-term choice.
