The External Beeswax Gothic Thumb Latch from From The Anvil is a decorative yet functional solution for ledge and brace doors, especially suited to plank or cottage-style timber doors. Featuring a thumb-shaped lever, this traditional latch works by pressing the lever down, which lifts the latch bar on the opposite side—allowing the door to open smoothly.
Each latch is hand-forged from mild steel, shaped by blacksmiths using fire and an anvil to preserve historic methods. The result is a piece that blends functionality with authentic period charm.
This version is finished in From The Anvil’s exclusive External Beeswax. Salt-tested to 480 hours, the finish provides strong anti-corrosive properties while showcasing a rich, matte patina. Its tones vary from blue-grey to deep ochre red, adding character to any door.
Thumb latches are traditionally used alongside tee hinges and are perfect for interior or sheltered exterior settings.
